Since I had to come back to his place to pick up the books anyway, I decided fish and chips was the most convenient dinner I could get us. So, a scoop of chips and two crumbed fish later, Kane and I were back at his place.

Kane pulled a six-pack of cold beers out of the fridge and set them on the coffee table. “Let’s eat here.”

I opened up the wrapped dinner, and Kane opened a beer for me. I took it. “Cheers.”

“You could really play today. I wasn’t expecting it.”

“I have three older brothers,” I said, settling down on the floor in front of the couch and across from Kane. “I like to think that explains a lot.”

“Sure does. I have two younger ones—”

Meeeeeow. Socrates scrambled up Kane’s arm to his shoulder. He tried to pluck him off, but the kitten really had his claws in his T-shirt. “Wow, your claws have bite,” he said.

I reached over the coffee table and untangled Socrates’ claws. The kitten had snagged a loose piece of thread that had somehow stuck. “There you go.” I smoothed the sleeve of Kane’s T-shirt and felt him freeze under my touch.

His gaze met mine, wide and curious but uncertain. I should have let go of him immediately, but my fingers were stuck to him. I could feel his warmth seeping through the thin sleeve.

Meeeeow.

I jerked back and Kane tucked the kitten into his lap.

“So,” he said, grabbing his beer. “You should play laser tag with us again sometime.” He took a long drink, and I did the same.

“Sounds like fun.”

“Yeah.”

Socrates wriggled in his lap, finding a better position, and I wished he’d stop, because it drew my attention—and it was jerking my mind in all sorts of directions. None of them appropriate.

I channeled my gaze on Kane’s fingers picking at the label on his beer instead.

“This is good fish,” I said, after swallowing a bite.

“Best in town.” He picked some more off his bottle. “Justin?”

My heart raced at the way he said my name. Soft, careful. Was he about to admit the connection? “Yeah?”

He held his breath, his chest expanding, and then shrugged and put down his beer. “Nothing. How’re things with the girlfriend?”

“Excuse me?” I wiped my greasy fingers against my pants. I’d done so well the whole afternoon putting Hannah out of my mind.

“Sorry, too private? You mentioned troubles the other day. I guess . . . I admit I’m curious as to what kind of trouble?”

I looked at him. I didn’t know Kane well enough to go baring my whole soul to him. But I did know DJ Dangerfield long enough. Maybe not to break down in front of him or anything, but at least to say it how it was.

“We broke up. We’ve—we’d—been together five years.”

“I’m sorry. That’s a long time to be with someone.”

I nodded. “I love her so much, you know? But it, uh, it hadn’t been the girlfriend/boyfriend type of love for a long time.” I took a really long drink of beer then.
